IIM Calcutta ranked at #23 for its Masters in Management ranking during the year 2018 and at #49 in the Global MBA ranking for the year 2019, recently grabbed the frontline with its 100% placement in record time. IIM Calcutta recently had 123 firms from various sectors participating in its placement week and there were a total of 501 offers made. This has been the 54th batch of the PGP programme that 441 students participating in it.
At least 15% of the students have received more than one offer. Consulting and Finance sectors made 29% and 21% of the offers and were accepted respectively amounting to 50% of the offers from these sectors. McKinsey & Co., The Boston Consulting Group, and Bain & Co., PwC, Alvarez & Marsal and some other leading companies in the consulting sector that made a good number of offers. Accenture, a prominent name in the space was the recruiter that made a whopping 24 offers that got accepted too!
Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML), JP Morgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, Citi and many more leading names from the finance sector made some good number of offers. The E-commerce giants seem to have hogged the limelight with their 68 accepted offers that amount to 16% of the recruitment. Amazon, Uber, Flipkart, Microsoft, and Salesforce are some of the leading names that made the offers. Management, Sales & Marketing, and IT- Analytics sectors made 14%, 12%, and 8% of the total offers respectively.
The placement cell of the IIM Calcutta has clearly not left any stone unturned in its placement initiatives for the past year and that has definitely resulted in some industry leaders like AmEx, Samsung, Coca Cola, Wipro, Aditya Birla Group, Wipro, and many more attending the placement programme. According to Prof Abhishek Goel, the Chairperson of CPDO recently mentioned that the student volunteers, with the help of a Bangalore based startup co-developed a system that helped in scheduling which was efficient, error-free and helped to maximize the interaction between the students and the recruiters and that the automation had been of great help.
The students were congratulated for their excellent performance by the senior officials. Dr.Anju Seth, the Director of IIM Calcutta excitedly mentioned that he was very happy to see the increase in demand for the MBA’s and that the high standard education imparted at the institute has been instrumental in creating top talent.
The PGP course that is accredited by IIM Calcutta is equivalent to the MBA that is awarded by Universities. A graduate from a recognized university/college, with a minimum of 50% marks in his/her graduation can secure an entrance into the IIM Calcutta. However, if the graduate has attained lower than 50% marks in graduation then the aspirant has to clear the entrance exam to secure a seat.
There is a very high demand for graduates from the Premier institutes and the 100% placement at the IIM Calcutta proves that the education institutions are able to provide the quality required by the industry. The Indian education system has a long way to go in terms of providing quality education and maintaining it but the news of the 100% placement is a clear indication that it is on the right path.
