The University Grants Commission (UGC) has officially invited higher educational institutions (HEIs) across India to apply for recognition to offer online and distance learning courses for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year. This initiative is part of UGC’s ongoing efforts to bring transparency to the admissions process and ensure that students enrol only in institutions with proper accreditation.

Eligible institutions, including universities that already hold approval from the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), are encouraged to apply for recognition. Moreover, HEIs currently recognized for offering online or distance learning programs can expand their portfolio by including additional courses under the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or online learning modes.

The UGC has set the deadline for application submissions as June 15, 2024. Institutions that successfully secure approval will be able to launch their academic sessions for 2024-25 in October 2024, marking a shift from the traditional start in July-August. This change is part of UGC's more significant push to streamline and enhance the accessibility of online and distance education options in India.

India's online and distance learning landscape has been expanding rapidly, especially since the pandemic, which saw a surge in demand for flexible learning options. With the UGC's push for greater accountability and transparency, these programs are poised to offer students more credible and quality education opportunities. Institutions interested in applying are advised to regularly check the UGC website for updates and detailed guidelines to ensure compliance with the latest requirements.

India Today reports that Periyar University in Salem, Tamil Nadu, has been debarred from offering distance learning programs. While the UGC has not provided a detailed explanation, this decision reflects the commission’s strict stance on maintaining high standards in distance education. The debarment reminds HEIs about the importance of adhering to quality guidelines and regulatory approvals when offering programs under the ODL or online mode.

By tightening the regulatory framework, the UGC seeks to ensure that only accredited institutions provide distance and online education, safeguarding students' interests and improving the overall credibility of such programs across the country. This move will benefit thousands of students nationwide by providing high-quality, accessible education options for 2024-25.
