Suvendu Adhikari Urges BJP Workers to Defeat TMC in Haldia Polls, Uses ‘Dimagi Naxals’ and ‘Cockroaches’ Jibe

West Bengal Chief Minister calls for a BJP sweep of all 30 Haldia municipality seats and urges party workers to strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s position.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday urged Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers to secure a sweeping victory over the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the upcoming Haldia municipality elections, using sharp language against what he described as “dimagi Naxals”, “tukde tukde gangs” and other “harmful forces” in society.

Addressing party workers at the foundation-laying ceremony for a new BJP office in Tamluk, Adhikari called on the party to win all 30 seats in the Haldia municipality and ensure that TMC chief Mamata Banerjee returned “empty-handed”.

“The Haldia municipality election is coming up. In this election, workers at all levels in the district must throw themselves into the fray with full force, and the Opposition must be completely wiped out in all 30 seats,” Adhikari said.

He added that the BJP had suffered considerable damage in the past and urged workers to prevent the opposition from gaining further political ground.

Adhikari calls for vigilance against ‘harmful forces’

In a separate part of his address, Adhikari urged party workers to remain united and vigilant against groups he accused of threatening national unity and social stability.

“Everyone should remain united and be extremely vigilant, so that the ‘dimagi Naxals’, ‘tukde tukde gangs’, ‘Kashmir-mange-azadi’ elements, and harmful forces like ‘the cockroaches’ in society cannot in any way raise their heads and spread,” he said.

The expressions were part of Adhikari’s political rhetoric; his allegations against the groups he named were not independently established in the reported remarks.

The chief minister also called for strengthening Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, arguing that the country needed to remain alert against forces he considers opposed to nationalism, patriotism and Indian cultural traditions.

His comments come amid the BJP’s continuing political confrontation with the TMC in West Bengal, where the upcoming municipal elections are expected to provide another arena for competition between the parties.

Adhikari highlights Durga Puja arrangements

During the address, Adhikari also spoke about Durga Puja celebrations across West Bengal, saying approximately 66,000 celebrations had been organised this year with the cooperation of the administration and the public.

He further claimed that nearly 13,000 new pujas had received government approval, describing the number as unprecedented and saying the permissions had been granted without requiring applicants to approach the courts.

Adhikari also referred to the recent stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Chorbagan, North Kolkata, in which 19 people died and 25 were injured.

He said arrangements had been made to ensure that the injured recovered and returned home, adding that he had personally visited the families of those who died and promised to support them.

Haldia election becomes a political test

Adhikari’s call for victory in all 30 Haldia municipality seats underlines the importance the BJP leadership is attaching to the upcoming local election. His appeal to party workers focused on an intensive campaign and preventing the TMC from retaining or expanding its political influence in the area.

The remarks also reflect the BJP’s broader political messaging around nationalism and cultural identity, themes Adhikari has repeatedly invoked in his public speeches.

For the opposition, the Haldia contest will offer an opportunity to challenge the BJP’s position at the local level. For the ruling party, a strong performance would provide a platform to reinforce its organisational presence.

With campaigning expected to intensify as the election approaches, the contest will test the parties’ ability to mobilise workers and voters in a closely watched local political battle.
