Associate Professor / Professor of Design (Education Focused)

Design is a rapidly growing and highly successful discipline within the school. Through our design research, we explore the role of design in speculating on the future, envisioning, defining, and informing the societal, ecological, political and life-centred interactions and experiences that emerge between people and technology. We push the boundaries of pedagogical practice in interaction and innovation, encouraging students to think critically about and prototype the objects, systems, experiences, and materials that shape human experience and life on the planet through the design lens. Beyond the recognition that design does not occur in a vacuum, we actively collaborate across disciplines and with a range of external partners, including industry, not-for-profit, government and community groups and organisations, in inclusive and place-based ways.

Education-focused roles are a specialized category of academic engagement, reserved for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, pedagogical practice and design. The successful candidate will devote the majority (up to 70%, or by mutual agreement 80%) of their academic workload allocation to education and educational development. We also value highly recognized expertise in higher education pedagogy.

The main areas of responsibility will include:

• Our expanding design programs, which include the Bachelor of Design (Interaction Design), Master of Design, and Master of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts, will be supervised, managed, and taught by the appointee.

• Take part in the continuing development of ADP’s design programs, which include curriculum planning and development, program delivery and assessment, studio practice, and innovative pedagogies.

• Look for partnerships, collaborations, and educational, research, and engagement initiatives that provide opportunities to increase the visibility of design locally, nationally, and globally.

• Make a significant research contribution to the School through original, high-quality outputs that demonstrate robust disciplinary scholarship, contribute to current discipline interest areas, and offer strong teaching-research linkages.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

PhD in Design or cognate field

A strong background in and leadership of design education and studio-based pedagogies.

Evidence of strong and effective strategic academic leadership, with a proven ability to sustain and grow research groups.This will include evidence of creating a lively and active academic atmosphere, as well as early and mid-career mentorship.

demonstrated ability to plan, carry out, and assess creative teaching and learning projects to guide curricular development.

a track record of innovative, excellent, and independent design research that is in line with one or more of our discipline’s interest areas, such as Interaction Design, Effective Interactions, Social and Civic Design, Urban Interfaces, and Designing with AI.
