A strong rank in JEE Advanced, GATE or JAM can open more than the doors to an IIT. For high-performing students, it can also unlock substantial financial support in the form of scholarships and fellowships.
Several Indian Institutes of Technology offer merit-linked financial assistance to attract academically strong students and help them pursue undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The latest addition comes from IIT Kharagpur, which has announced the Director’s Platinum Jubilee Excellence Fellowship (DPEF) 2026 as part of its 75th-anniversary celebrations.
IIT Kharagpur: Up to ₹90,000 a month for PhD scholars
The IIT Kharagpur DPEF offers an enhanced fellowship to candidates who rank among the top 50 in GATE 2026 and subsequently pursue a PhD at the institute.
Selected scholars will receive ₹80,000 per month for the first two years, followed by ₹90,000 per month for the next three years. Candidates must, however, meet IIT Kharagpur’s admission requirements.
There is no separate application for the fellowship. Eligible candidates can apply through the institute’s rolling PhD admission process.
The institute has also extended the DPEF to JAM 2026 rankers placed from 1 to 50 who choose to pursue a master’s degree at IIT Kharagpur. The move expands the institute’s merit-based incentives beyond JEE Advanced to students performing exceptionally well in GATE and JAM.
IIT Kanpur: ₹3 lakh a year for top JEE Advanced rankers
IIT Kanpur’s Bright Minds Scholarships target high-performing students entering its BTech and BS programmes.
Students ranked among the top 100 in the JEE Advanced All India Ranking can be considered for the scholarship. Each selected student receives ₹3 lakh annually.
Of this amount, ₹2 lakh covers tuition fees, while ₹1 lakh is intended to support hostel and mess expenses, books, medical insurance and other living costs.
The scholarship can continue for all four years of the undergraduate programme, subject to the student maintaining a minimum CPI of 8.0.
IIT Roorkee: ₹25,000 a month under James Thomason Scholarship
IIT Roorkee offers the James Thomason Scholarship to students admitted with a JEE Advanced All India Rank of up to 250.
The scholarship provides ₹25,000 per month for the duration of the programme. However, continued eligibility depends on academic performance. Students must maintain a CGPA of at least 8.0 at the end of each academic year.
The scheme therefore combines entrance-examination merit with sustained performance at the institute.
IIT Delhi: Merit combined with financial need
IIT Delhi follows a somewhat different approach in some of its scholarship schemes, combining JEE Advanced performance with financial eligibility.
The Amit and Deepali Sinha Foundation Scholarship is available to first-year students enrolled in BTech or dual-degree programmes. Fifteen students are selected based on JEE Advanced rank, subject to the specified eligibility conditions.
Applicants must have an annual family income below ₹9 lakh and should not be availing themselves of the Vidya Lakshmi Loan Scheme.
IIT Delhi has also received a ₹10-crore endowment from alumnus Dr Amit Sinha to establish a full-ride fellowship for the top five undergraduate students joining the institute each year based on JEE Advanced rank. One of the five fellowships is reserved for the top woman JEE ranker joining IIT Delhi, with the stated objective of encouraging greater participation of women in STEM.
A high rank can mean more than admission
The scholarship landscape across IITs shows that entrance-examination performance can have financial consequences beyond securing a seat.
For students appearing for JEE Advanced, GATE or JAM, a strong rank may translate into tuition support, living-expense assistance or enhanced research funding, depending on the institute and programme.
However, most awards come with additional conditions, including academic performance, family-income thresholds or fulfilment of institutional admission requirements. Students should therefore check the latest official scholarship rules of the IIT they plan to join before assuming eligibility.
For academically strong candidates, these schemes can significantly reduce the cost of an IIT education while also creating incentives to pursue higher studies and research.
