From ₹20,000 to a Global Luxury Ambition: The Sabyasachi Story

When Sabyasachi Mukherjee graduated from NIFT Kolkata in 1999, he had job offers in front of him. Instead, he chose to build something of his own.

His starting capital was just ₹20,000, provided by his family. He began with a three-member team, limited resources and an ambition to establish his own voice in Indian fashion.

The turning point came in 2002, when Sabyasachi presented Kashgaar Bazaar at Lakmé Fashion Week. The collection helped bring wider attention to a design philosophy that was rooted firmly in India’s textile and craft traditions.

Rather than treating traditional Indian craftsmanship as something that belonged only to the past, Sabyasachi made it central to his brand identity. Banarasi silk, intricate embroidery, traditional textiles and antique jewellery became part of a distinctive visual language that would define the label.

Over time, the Sabyasachi brand expanded beyond clothing into jewellery, handbags, accessories and home collections. What began as a small fashion label gradually developed into a broader luxury business.

The brand’s commercial scale became particularly visible in 2021, when Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd. acquired a 51% stake for ₹398 crore. The transaction implied a valuation of roughly ₹780 crore at the time.

The business has continued to expand its luxury positioning. According to figures cited by Vogue, the Sabyasachi business generated $68.2 million in revenue in FY2026, as the brand increasingly seeks recognition as a global luxury house emerging from India.

The Sabyasachi journey also reflects a broader shift in the way Indian heritage is presented to the world. Traditional textiles, craftsmanship and cultural references were not stripped away in the pursuit of international luxury aesthetics. Instead, they became central to the brand’s identity.

For Indian entrepreneurs and designers, the story offers a notable business lesson: cultural heritage can become a competitive asset when it is translated into a contemporary brand language.

Sabyasachi’s journey, from a ₹20,000 beginning and a three-member team to a luxury business with international ambitions, illustrates how an Indian identity can itself become the foundation of a global brand.
