What Is Forensic Science? How to Pursue a Career Through the AIFSET Entrance Test?

Have you ever wondered how investigators use finger prints, check out dubious documents or understand what has happened at a crime scene using science? Forensic science uses science and investigation to help experts look at evidence to help bring about justice.

If you enjoy science, investigation and solving real life problems then forensic science could make for an interesting career choice. If you plan on going into this field after your class 12/graduation then it is a good idea to look into what courses are available, what the entry requirements are and which entrance exams you will need to take. One of these entrance exams is the All India Forensic Science Entrance Test (AIFSET). This exam will allow you to gain a place onto a course in forensic science offered by participating universities.

What Is Forensic Science?

Forensic science uses science to look at evidence relating to investigations. It can help investigators understand and analyse physical, biological, chemical and digital evidence.

Forensic experts will look at different types of evidence such as finger prints, blood samples, DNA, hair, fibre, weapons, questionable documents and digital evidence. This can help to gather facts, link evidence to people or events and help investigations.

Forensic science can also be used to investigate cyber crimes, verify documents, look at forensic psychology, toxicology and more.

What Are The Different Types Of Forensic Science?

There are many different types of forensic science:

  1. Forensic Biology/DNA Analysis: Forensic Biology looks at biological evidence such as blood, hair, saliva and other bodily fluids. DNA analysis can help identify individuals and biological relations.
  2. Forensic Chemistry/Toxicology: Forensic chemistry experts will look at chemicals, drugs, poisons and more to understand what they contain and if they can be linked to an investigation.
  3. Forensic Ballistics: This looks at weapons, bullets, cartridge casings and more.
  4. Finger Print Analysis: Experts will look at ridge patterns and prints to help identify or confirm someone’s identity.
  5. Digital/Cyber Forensic: This looks at digital devices, electronic records and online evidence to help investigate cyber crimes.
  6. Forensic Psychology: Using psychological knowledge to look at legal and investigative situations.
  7. Document Analysis: Experts will look at handwriting, signatures, printed text and any suspected tampering to see if documents are genuine.

What is AIFSET?

AIFSET stands for All India Forensic Science Entrance Test. It is an entrance exam for students wanting to study forensic science at a participating university.

Generally students will need to;

  • Check the eligibility criteria of their desired course.
  • Register on the AIFSET website.
  • Study using the syllabus for the exam.
  • Sit the entrance exam.
  • Look up the results and go through the admission process at the university.

Make sure to look up the most recent AIFSET exam guidelines and also the requirements of the university.

What Courses Can Be Done in Forensic Science?

There are various courses in Forensic Science that students can pursue. Whether it is an undergraduate or postgraduate course depends on the level of education they currently hold, and what specialisation they want.

Students can opt for a B.Sc. in Forensic Science after class 12. This is a general course to provide students with basic knowledge in science and how to investigate crime scenes, examine evidence and perform laboratory work. Some universities offer specialised undergraduate courses such as a B.Sc. Cyber Forensic.

Once you have completed your Bachelor Degree, you will be eligible to apply for an M.Sc. in Forensic Science or specialised postgraduate courses such as cyber forensics, forensic psychology, DNA fingerprinting and profiling. There are different courses available at different universities depending on their eligibility criteria.

Who Can Apply For AIFSET?

AIFSET can be used as an entry point for various undergraduate and postgraduate forensic science courses.

Applicants must have completed or be sitting their Class 12 or equivalent exams. They must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology and/or Mathematics as their main subjects. As stated in the published criteria applicants must have achieved a minimum of 50% overall.

Applicants must have completed or be sitting their final semester of a B.Sc. Forensic Science or eligible Science graduation course. They must have achieved a minimum of 50% overall. As stated in the published criteria.

Eligibility and admissions criteria may vary between different universities. Applicants must check the most up to date information on AIFSET and the admissions criteria of your preferred university.

Career Opportunities In Forensic Science

Having a forensic science degree can open many doors within the public, private sector and research. The opportunities available will depend on your level of education, specialism, hands on experience and what is required by employers.

Graduates can look into roles such as forensic science lab assistant, forensic analyst, crime scene investigator, fingerprint analyst, forensic biology analyst, toxicology analyst and digital forensics. With further education and training graduates can look into specific roles such as DNA analysis, questioned document examination and forensic psychology.

Potential employers could include forensic science labs, law enforcement, cybercrime, research organisations, private forensic labs and universities. Generally public sector jobs will follow the eligibility and selection criteria set by the department.

Is Forensic Science The Right Career For You?

If you enjoy studying science, observation, investigation and analytical thinking then forensic science can be the right choice for you. You must be patient, meticulous and be able to analyse evidence carefully without letting your own opinions sway your conclusions.

Before choosing a forensic science course students should look into the subjects, specialisms, hands on experience and what is required in terms of careers.

Getting Started with Forensic Science
