The University of Western Australia (UWA) has received final approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to operate its Chennai campus, bringing an Australian university’s degree programmes closer to students in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India.
The university announced the approval on 5 October 2026. Student orientation began on the same date, and regular classes are scheduled to start on 19 October. The Chennai campus follows the university’s Mumbai campus, which opened in September 2026 as part of the university’s expansion in India.
UWA says that the Chennai campus is the first campus of a foreign higher education provider to receive this approval in Tamil Nadu. It is also the first Australian university and Group of Eight institution to be approved to operate a campus in Chennai.
Which courses will UWA Chennai offer?
The initial academic offering focuses on business, computer science, data science and artificial intelligence. Programmes announced for the Chennai campus include:
- Bachelor of Business (Business Management)
- Computer Science
- Data Science
- Bachelor of Advanced Computer Science, with an AI specialisation
- Master of Information Technology
- Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Students should confirm the latest programme details, eligibility criteria and intake information before applying as course availability and admission requirements can vary.
How much will UWA Chennai courses cost?
Feeling fees is an important consideration for students comparing international university campuses with Indian institutions.
UWA India’s published 2026 fee schedule lists the first full year’s tuition for the Bachelor of Business (Business Management) at ₹14.52 lakh for domestic students. The first-year tuition for the Bachelor of Advanced Computer Science is listed at ₹17.93 lakh for domestic students.
These figures only represent tuition, and they do not represent the full cost of a degree, and fees may be revised. Students should confirm the applicable fee for their programme and intake and account for accommodation, transport, learning materials and other living expenses.
Scholarship availability and eligibility should also be confirmed directly with the university. Students should not assume that a scholarship will cover the full cost of attendance.
Will a degree from UWA’s Chennai campus be recognised?
Under UGC’s 2023 regulations for foreign higher education institutions operating campuses in India, qualifications awarded by an approved campus are recognised in the university’s home country and are equivalent to the corresponding qualification awarded by their main campus. The regulations also provide for equivalence with corresponding Indian higher education qualifications, subject to the framework’s provisions.
This is significant for students who desire an international university qualification without relocating overseas. However, recognition rules do not negate the need to confirm course-specific requirements for professional registration, further study or particular jobs.
What should students consider before applying?
An international university name is only a part of an education decision. Students should compare the curriculum, teaching methods, access to laboratories and industry projects, internship opportunities, faculty support and career services.
They should also ask how academic support will be provided at the Chennai campus, what opportunities may be available to study at UWA’s Australian campus, and whether those opportunities require additional fees or selection requirements. These details can impact the value that students get from the programme.
The total cost is one that deserves attention. Comparing tuition, living expenses, scholarships and potential borrowing should give families a more realistic picture than looking at the university’s reputation alone.
A new option for students in Tamil Nadu
UWA’s Chennai campus presents another international higher education option for students considering business and technology degrees. Its local presence may appeal to families seeking access to an Australian university without directly bearing the cost of overseas education.
The decision, however, should come down to more than the country associated with the degree.
Students should verify the course, full cost, academic support and career opportunities before committing to a programme. With classes scheduled to begin on 19 October 2026, prospective applicants should confirm the latest admissions information directly with the university.
