Assam to develop Lachit Borphukan Police Academy as national centre for police training

The Assam government will develop the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy at Dergaon as a national centre of excellence for training police personnel, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said while addressing a passing-out parade of trainees here today.

The chief minister visited the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy to review the Passing Out Parade of 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police (Probationers) and 371 Communication Branch Constables. The function marks the completion of training of 403 police personnel who were inducted into the Assam Police.

The chief minister addressed the probationers and presented medals to the trainees for their meritorious performance during the training.

While addressing the trainees, Sarma said that the passing-out parade was ‘one of the most unforgettable events for an officer in uniform’ and warned that the honor and responsibility of wearing police uniform will always remain with them.

The 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police (Probationers) had completed 52 weeks of basic training which consisted of two weeks of residential training at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy followed by two months of specialized training at the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) in Meghalaya.

The training covered various topics of police administration, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, POCSO Act, Arms Act and NDPS Act.

They were also trained in cyber-crime, forensic, child protection, weapon training, and horse riding, apart from being introduced to e-suraksha initiatives like the Assam Police Seva Setu.

They also received training in modern police communication system including the use of various digital devices and cyber security.

Speaking about the 371 trainees of the Communication Branch, Sarma said that these probationers had undertaken a 20-week basic training at the Second Assam Police Battalion, Howly and the 28th Assam Police Battalion.

Their training consisted of police communication, use of modern technology, digital devices and cyber security.

The chief minister said that the training of these new recruits would make them techno-savvy and professional policemen with a human touch.

“The enhancement of training infrastructure and training modules as per the latest requirements will help us meet the challenges of ensuring internal security and contemporary requirements of police administration,” Sarma said.

“The Lachit Borphukan Police Academy, which has now gained reputation and fame, is in demand even outside Assam.

The police training academies of other states have started approaching us,” he added.

He directed the Assam Director General of Police to step up efforts to upgrade the infrastructure of the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy.

“This includes upgrading the sporting facilities.

The Assam Police’s 112 emergency response service will also start from here,” he said.

Sarma said that his vision for the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy is to make it comparable with the best academies of the Indian Army.

“Our Assam Police has been able to complete the recruitment of about 21,000 personnel in the last five years.

In addition to this, about 15,000-20,000 police personnel will be recruited to fulfill the needs of providing employment to two lakh youths in the state in the next five years.

Focus areas of Assam Police will continue to be law and order, crime prevention, combating cyber-crime, crimes against women and children, and developing Assam as a state of social justice,” he added.
