Dr. Sabitha Ramamurthy, Chancellor of CMR University and President of CMR Jnanadhara Trust, has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) for her contribution to higher education and academic development.
The honorary doctorate was presented during VTU’s 26th Annual Convocation at its Jnana Sangama campus in Belagavi, where Dr. Ramamurthy was one of three prominent educationists and technocrats to receive honorary degrees. The other two were Dr. M.P. Shyam, President of Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust, and Prof. T.G. Sitharam, former Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The occasion is the latest in Dr. Ramamurthy’s long career in education and institution building spanning more than three decades. At CMR University she serves as Chancellor while also leading CMR Jnanadhara Trust.
Recognition of a Journey in Education
Dr. Ramamurthy’s work in education has spanned several decades. According to CMR University, she embarked on her entrepreneurial journey in 1991 with the start of a school which attracted the attention of six children, who were among the first to enroll and later helped the institution grow into a network of educational institutions catering to more than 20,000 students from over 60 countries.
Ramamurthy has been involved in the creation of several institutions under the CMR name, including CMR National Public School, CMR Institute of Technology and CMR University. She is also the founding President of Ekya Schools.
CMR University, which was established under the CMR University Act of 2013, has seen its reach extend across various disciplines from architecture and engineering, management and law, design and liberal studies to science and computer studies. It has an academic programme which is said to focus on interdisciplinary learning and creativity, innovation and research.
A Recognition Shared With the CMR Community
Upon receiving the honorary degree, Dr. Ramamurthy acknowledged the efforts of the staff and students who have supported the growth of CMR. She expressed the philosophy behind her approach to education as one that puts the growth of institutions alongside the development of students and educators, saying “If they grow, we grow.”
The recognition also comes as CMR continues to invest in its educational footprint and focus on academic development, research, innovation and industry engagement. VTU’s decision to award Dr. Ramamurthy a D.Sc. degree acknowledges her contributions to higher education and academic development, according to the university’s announcement.
A Milestone for CMR University
The honorary degree is the latest in a series of recognitions Dr. Ramamurthy has received during her long career in education and institution building. CMR University describes her as an educationist, entrepreneur and institution builder who has focused on creating opportunities for learners and strengthening educational institutions.
For CMR University, the recognition is also an acknowledgment of the contribution of the students, faculty and staff, who have contributed to the growth of the institution.
As Dr. Ramamurthy continues to lead CMR University as Chancellor, the principle she expressed while accepting the honorary doctorate offers a succinct summary of her approach to education: “If they grow, we grow.”
