The Department of Biotechnology’s Biotechnology Eligibility Test (DBT-BET) is being merged with the CSIR-UGC NET Life Sciences examination from the December 2026 cycle. The National Testing Agency has introduced a new discipline: Life Sciences and Bio-Technology (LS&BT), along with a new, revised syllabus for students applying for research fellowships and other academic positions.
The merger of these two examinations, which covers students with varied backgrounds and fields of specialisation, aims to eliminate the need for students to take two similar tests and recognise the overlap between scientific fields.
For students applying for research fellowships in India, the most immediate concern is learning the revised syllabus for the CSIR-UGC NET and preparing according to it to appear for the December examination.
What Has Changed in CSIR-UGC NET?
Previously, candidates could take CSIR-UGC NET Life Sciences or DBT-BET, depending on their academic background and the fellowship or eligibility route they were pursuing. However, with the merger of these two examinations that takes effect in December 2026, students will have to prepare according to the revised syllabus LS&BT, rather than the previous syllabi of LS or DBT-BET.
The revised syllabus consists of 14 units that include cellular organisation, inheritance biology, developmental biology, plant and animal physiology, ecology, bioinformatics, computational biology and industrial biotechnology, as well as advances in biotechnology and methods in biological research.
How Will the Merger Affect Students?
Since the merger concerns students from two specialised fields of science, the change in the examination pattern will affect students differently, depending on their prior specialisation. While a student with a background in biotechnology may be more familiar with genetic engineering, a life science student may have a stronger foundation in ecology, physiology or the study of organisms.
With the merger, candidates will have to bridge their gaps in knowledge rather than relying solely on the specialisation they studied at the undergraduate level. The clarification released by CSIR in January 2026 also addressed the concerns of students who feared that the change in the pattern of the examination would affect fellowship opportunities.
The clarification revealed that the merger would not impact the number of fellowships since the CSIR and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) would continue to provide fellowships through their respective processes, and the selection process would be based only on the common CSIR-UGC NET examination.
The clarification further mentioned that sufficient optional questions on conventional life sciences and biotechnology would be included in the paper to give candidates from both specialisations an equal opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge.
However, the convenience of the merger does not guarantee easier selection, since the final selection will depend on the performance and the specific criteria applicable to each candidate.
What Opportunities Does the Examination Offer?
The Joint CSIR-UGC NET is used to determine the eligibility of candidates for JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) plus Eligibility for Lectureship, Eligibility for Lectureship with PhD admission, and PhD admission only, depending on the result of the candidate.
Applicants must therefore keep in mind the outcome they are targeting when preparing for the examination since the eligibility criteria differ for each outcome.
Additionally, those who wish to receive a research fellowship must also understand the eligibility and general conditions of the fellowship, since appearing for the CSIR-UGC NET examination does not guarantee fellowship or admission to a research programme.
CSIR-UGC NET December 2026: Important Dates
According to the official announcement, the application form for the December 2026 examination will open on 7 October.
Important dates:
- Last date of submission of the application: 5 November 2026 up to 11.50 pm
- Application correction window: 10–12 November 2026
- Examination dates: 19, 22 and 27 December 2026
The examination will be conducted in the computer-based mode, and the official CSIR-UGC NET website will release the detailed schedule and further updates.
How Should Candidates Prepare?
Students should first download the revised syllabus for LS-BT and compare it with the subjects they have studied to identify topics they understand well, those they need to revise and those they must prepare from scratch.
They can use previous question papers to practice concepts that overlap with the new paper. However, students should not rely entirely on old question papers and must prepare according to the revised syllabus.
They should also consult the information bulletin for eligibility, regulations and guidelines pertaining to the examination. The merger of CSIR-UGC NET and DBT-BET creates a common eligibility test for students of life sciences and biotechnology.
Its success will be determined by how the examination is conducted, whether it favours one specialisation over the other and how well candidates are prepared to deal with the questions. Aspirants must understand the revised pattern of the CSIR-UGC NET examination to perform well in the December examination.
