Madhya Pradesh has expanded the rollout of the 12-digit APAAR ID for school students, creating a digital identity aimed at bringing academic records, achievements and other education-related information under one system.
More than 1.14 crore students, or about 78.5% of the state’s student population, have so far been assigned the unique digital credentials under a state-wide campaign.
The initiative is part of the broader national push to modernise student records and education administration under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The APAAR ID is designed to give each student a permanent digital academic identity, allowing records to be stored and accessed through an integrated system rather than relying entirely on physical documents.
One digital identity for academic records
The system is intended to consolidate a student’s academic information, including marksheets, grades, certificates and other recognised achievements, into a digital profile.
For students, the system could make it easier to carry their academic records when moving between schools, boards or higher education institutions. It is also expected to reduce dependence on paperwork and help institutions verify student records more efficiently.
The state-wide campaign has focused on enrolling school-going children and generating their unique IDs. With more than three-fourths of the student population covered, Madhya Pradesh has made significant progress in the implementation of the digital student identity system.
Easier credit transfer and student mobility
A key feature of the digital framework is its potential to support the recognition and transfer of academic credits.
As students progress through different stages of education, their learning records can be linked to their digital identity. This could make transitions between institutions and education levels smoother by reducing the risk of misplaced records and simplifying the verification of qualifications.
The system also fits into the wider national effort to create a more flexible education structure, where learning achievements can be recognised across institutions and stages of education.
Push for digital education governance
The rollout marks another step towards digitising student administration in Madhya Pradesh. By creating a centralised digital record for students, education authorities aim to improve record management while making academic information more portable.
The initiative also reflects the growing role of digital infrastructure in implementing NEP 2020, particularly in areas such as student mobility, academic credit recognition and technology-enabled education services.
With the APAAR rollout still expanding, the focus will now be on ensuring that more students are brought into the system and that their academic records remain accurate, secure and accessible throughout their education journey.
