Despite the Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Act, 2017, permitting an annual fee increase of up to 10%, only 35 schools in Ahmedabad have applied for a fee hike for the upcoming academic year. Out of the city’s 444 schools, this represents a surprisingly low response, prompting curiosity about the reasons behind this restraint.

The Ahmedabad Municipal School Board (AMSB) has received applications requesting fee hikes ranging from 5% to 10%. However, the muted reaction from the majority of schools indicates a possible cautious approach toward fee increases. Many schools might be hesitant to raise fees due to factors like maintaining affordability for parents or staying competitive in a challenging educational market.

The Gujarat Self-Financed Schools (Regulation of Fees) Act, introduced in 2017, aims to provide a structured framework for fee regulation in self-financed schools. The Act allows institutions to adjust fees annually within a specified range, offering schools the flexibility to manage operational costs while ensuring compliance.

However, the limited number of applications suggests that schools in Ahmedabad are being conservative in leveraging this provision. Economic considerations, including the financial burden on parents and the competitive dynamics of the education sector, could be influencing this cautious stance.

The AMSB is currently reviewing the applications and is expected to announce its decisions soon. The outcomes could have implications for the city’s educational landscape, potentially setting a precedent for how schools balance fee adjustments with maintaining accessibility for students.

This restrained response also raises broader questions about the viability of fee hike provisions and their practical utility for schools navigating financial and social pressures. The coming weeks will reveal whether this trend continues or if more schools opt to apply in subsequent cycles.

As the education ecosystem in Ahmedabad evolves, the AMSB’s decisions and their impact on stakeholders will likely be closely watched, providing insights into how regulatory frameworks influence the dynamics of school fee structures.

Aimed at balancing academics and athletics, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the introduction of special exams for students actively participating in sports events. This initiative aims to provide a platform for student-athletes to excel in both their academic pursuits and sports endeavors without having to compromise on either.

The decision, which will primarily benefit students engaged in national and international sports, ensures that these students will not have to choose between their board exams and important sports competitions. The special exams will allow them to appear for their board exams on separate dates, thereby accommodating their participation in events.

To qualify for the special exams, students must be involved in national or international sports events recognized by prominent bodies such as the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The board will announce specific dates for these exams, with the provision of separate schedules for both Class 10 and Class 12 students. This move is a significant step toward encouraging students to pursue excellence in sports without the stress of academic deadlines conflicting with athletic commitments. Some of the key benefits include:

The special exams will create a conducive environment for students to engage in sports while continuing their academic journey, helping to nurture well-rounded individuals. This initiative allows students to seamlessly balance their academic exams with participation in sports events, offering them the flexibility to pursue both passions without compromising one for the other.

The introduction of special exams comes as part of a broader effort to promote a culture where sports and academics are given equal importance. It aligns with the government’s vision of encouraging students to be all-rounders, excelling in both the classroom and the sports arena.

This initiative is expected to serve as a morale booster for young athletes, ensuring that their hard work in sports is recognized while also allowing them to focus on their education. By removing the conflict between exam schedules and sports events, the CBSE is fostering an environment that supports the dual aspirations of students.

Overall, the introduction of special exams is a welcome and much-needed move to ensure that students can excel in both sports and academics, ultimately contributing to their holistic development.

Gujarat Police have dismantled a fake medical degree racket operating in Surat, arresting 14 individuals, including 10 fake doctors. The racket, which sold counterfeit medical degrees, has exposed a serious threat to public health and safety.

The accused were found issuing fraudulent Bachelor of Electro-Homeopathy Medicine and Surgery (BEMS) degrees for Rs 70,000. Shockingly, many of the degree holders had no prior medical education, with some having completed only their 10th-grade schooling.

The operation was orchestrated by three main culprits: Rasesh Gujarathi, BK Rawat, and Irfan Saiyed. Together, they issued nearly 1,500 fake medical degrees, allowing unqualified individuals to pose as doctors. This widespread fraud enabled these fake doctors to run clinics and prescribe treatments, endangering countless lives.

Raids conducted by the police at clinics operated by the accused revealed significant evidence, including large quantities of allopathic and homeopathic medicines, injections, syrup bottles, and forged certificates. The discovery underscores the alarming scale at which the racket was operating.

The police have arrested 14 individuals connected to the scam, including the masterminds and fake doctors. Authorities are now investigating the full extent of the racket, aiming to identify additional suspects and trace the recipients of the fake degrees. In response to the revelations, the Gujarat Health Department has been alerted to take strict action against fake doctors and their clinics. Health officials are also working to ensure such malpractices are detected and curbed in the future.

The police have issued an advisory urging the public to remain cautious and verify the credentials of medical professionals before seeking treatment. Citizens are encouraged to check for licenses and certifications from recognized medical boards to avoid falling victim to fraudulent practitioners.

The exposure of this racket highlights serious gaps in the oversight of healthcare providers. It calls for stricter regulations and better mechanisms to verify the credentials of medical professionals. As investigations continue, the authorities aim to bring all culprits to justice and prevent similar scams from jeopardizing public health in the future. This case serves as a reminder of the critical importance of vigilance in maintaining the integrity of the healthcare system.
