Schools in Jammu and Kashmir's Kashmir division and the summer zones of the Jammu division have implemented a new schedule to cope with the scorching heatwave. The revised timings require schools to begin at 8 am and end at 1 pm for students, with staff working until 2 pm. This change, however, has sparked mixed reactions from stakeholders.
The decision came after numerous requests from parents and educators for adjustments due to the intense heat. Previously, school timings varied depending on location, ranging from 9 am to 3 pm in Srinagar's municipal limits to 10 am to 4 pm in other areas.
While intended to protect students, the new schedule has some parents worried. They argue that children residing far from schools will have to wake up even earlier to catch buses arriving before 8 am. Additionally, dismissal at 1 pm coincides with the peak heat, making commutes home uncomfortable, especially on crowded buses.
Teachers also expressed concerns, particularly regarding younger students. They believe the new hours won't significantly reduce heatstroke risks, as children will still be in school during the hottest part of the day. Some parents proposed a short break, particularly for kindergarten students, who might struggle with the adjusted timings.
School administrators acknowledged the challenges but highlighted the need to balance student safety with syllabus completion. The President of the Private Schools Association argued that extending the vacation would disrupt curriculum progress.
The new timings will remain in effect until August 15, 2024. While intended to provide relief during the heatwave, the schedule has generated debate among those invested in the well-being of Jammu and Kashmir's students.
