A tragic incident unfolded as two postgraduate students from Fergusson College, Pune, lost their lives after drowning in Mulshi Dam, situated about 40 kilometres from the city. The victims, identified as Pratik Shinde (24) and Shreyas Kandalkar (25), reportedly slipped into the dam while taking selfies near the water's edge.
The two students, who had travelled to Mulshi Dam for a casual outing, stood near the dam when they lost their balance and fell into the water. Witnesses quickly alerted local authorities, prompting a joint rescue effort by the fire brigade and police. Despite the swift response, the rescue teams could not save the students in time.
The Pune Police have registered a case of accidental death and are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the tragic incident. Initial reports suggest that the students may have been too close to the dam's edge while attempting to take photographs, which resulted in their fall.
The tragic deaths of Shinde and Kandalkar have once again raised concerns about safety around water bodies and trendy tourist spots such as Mulshi Dam. Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid taking unnecessary risks when near water.
The college community and local authorities have offered condolences to the families of the deceased, with many calling for stricter safety measures around the dam to prevent future incidents. Barriers and warning signs are already in place, but this incident has prompted discussions about increasing public awareness and possibly enhancing safety protocols at popular recreational spots.
As the investigation continues, the untimely deaths of Pratik Shinde and Shreyas Kandalkar serve as a sobering reminder of the risks posed by water bodies and the importance of prioritising safety over momentary thrills.
