Uttarakhand's Kumaon region braces for heavy rain today, July 2nd. According to ANI, schools and Anganwadis (childcare centres) from Class 1 to 12 will remain closed as a precautionary measure. This move comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for weighty rainfall in several Indian states, including Uttarakhand.

The red alert, effective until July 4th, covers Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Gujarat, Assam, and Meghalaya. An orange alert, indicating weighty rainfall, has also been issued for Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Goa, valid until July 5th.

This heightened alert follows an earlier red warning issued on June 30th for several northeastern states, anticipating significant downpours over the subsequent two days. IMD scientist Naresh Kumar confirms an active monsoon phase, with substantial rainfall expected in the northeast and favourable conditions for the monsoon's advancement.

The national capital recently witnessed its heaviest rainfall in nearly a century. According to the IMD, Delhi received a staggering 228 mm of rain between June 27th and 28th, marking the highest 24-hour rainfall in June since 1936.

With heavy showers anticipated across various parts of India, citizens are advised to stay updated on weather advisories and exercise caution during this monsoon season.
