Indian students entering class 6 can expect a more familiar landscape in their new English language textbooks. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced "Poorvi," a book that prioritizes Indian authors and settings, marking a significant shift from previous editions.

This change aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023. "Poorvi" features nine original prose pieces by Indian authors, compared to just five in the old textbook, "Honeysuckle." Notably, the new book also boasts poems by Indian writers alongside a select few by non-Indian authors.

This focus on Indian themes extends beyond authorship. "Poorvi" features chapters rooted in Indian contexts, including one titled "Culture and Tradition." This chapter introduces the term "Bharat" for India, using it prominently alongside "India" and dedicating a section titled "Hamara Bharat, Incredible India!" to the country's rich heritage.

The revised curriculum also incorporates practical knowledge specific to India. Students will delve into the diverse uses of spices beyond cooking and explore the benefits of yoga, a practice deeply connected to Indian culture.

This revamp is part of a larger initiative. NCERT planned to release new textbooks for classes 3 and 6 earlier this year, with class 3 books already available. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated affiliated schools to adopt these new syllabi and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 in the upcoming academic session, replacing the previous editions.
