Protests erupted today in Kolkata as members of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) demonstrated against alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) and the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET).
The protests were staged outside two major educational institutions. In the southern part of the city, tyres were set ablaze outside the gates of Jadavpur University. Concurrently, a sit-in protest occurred in front of the main entrance of Presidency University, situated in the College Street area.
The students are demanding the arrest of those involved in the paper leaks and other exam irregularities. They are also seeking action against the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the exams, and the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister for Education, Government of India.
A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry is ongoing. Additionally, the Supreme Court is hearing cases related to NEET irregularities, with the next hearing set for July 8, presided over by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud.
Abhinaba Basu, an SFI Jadavpur University Unit member, stated that the protests should continue till the afternoon. He emphasized that the demonstrations have student support and have not disrupted campus access, as reported by Edex Live.
