Aiming at promoting educational equity, the Maharashtra government has announced free higher education for girls from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and orphaned girls and boys.

This progressive move, set to take effect from the upcoming academic year 2024-25, underscores the state’s commitment to empowering underprivileged students and bridging the educational gap.

Effective from the next academic year, the initiative will cover 100% of tuition fees for eligible students. This applies to government colleges, government-aided non-government colleges, and partially aided and permanent unaided colleges across the state. However, it excludes privately deemed and self-financing universities, ensuring the focus remains on publicly funded and state-aided institutions.

The Maharashtra government has allocated an estimated expenditure of Rs 906 crore for the first year of this scheme, with an additional Rs 906.05 crore sanctioned for the current academic year. This substantial investment reflects the state’s dedication to fostering an inclusive educational environment. The state government will bear the financial burden of this initiative, amounting to Rs 2000 crore annually, demonstrating a long-term commitment to this cause.

The decision is poised to benefit approximately 2,05,499 girls across Maharashtra, significantly impacting their educational journey and prospects. By removing financial barriers, the state aims to encourage more girls from marginalized communities to pursue higher education, thereby enhancing their socio-economic status and contributing to the overall development of society.

Maharashtra’s Education Minister emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative, stating, "Education is a powerful tool for social change. By making higher education accessible to girls from EWS, SEBC, OBC, and orphaned backgrounds, we are not only fulfilling a moral obligation but also investing in the future of our state. These young women will become the change-makers of tomorrow."

The announcement has received widespread acclaim from educators, social activists, and the general public. Many believe this initiative will set a precedent for other states to follow, promoting gender equality and educational inclusivity on a broader scale. The academic institutions across Maharashtra are gearing up to accommodate new students. The government is also expected to roll out awareness campaigns to ensure that eligible students and their families are well-informed about the scheme and its benefits.

Maharashtra’s initiative to provide free higher education to girls from underprivileged backgrounds is a significant step towards creating a more equitable and educated society. By investing in the education of these young women, the state is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
