Indian students pursuing higher education abroad have reached a record high of 13,35,878 in 2024, according to recent data shared by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in the Rajya Sabha.

This figure represents a notable increase from 13,18,955 in 2023 and 9,07,404 in 2022, reflecting a growing trend of students seeking international academic opportunities.

Canada has emerged as the top destination, with approximately 4,27,000 Indian students enrolled in its institutions. The United States is the second most popular choice, hosting 3,37,630 Indian students. Other countries with significant Indian student populations include China, with 8,580 students, and Ukraine, which has 2,510. Greece and Pakistan have much smaller numbers, with only eight and 14 students, respectively, while Israel hosts 900 Indian students.

Singh highlighted that Indian missions abroad are actively engaged in supporting these students. The missions encourage them to register on the Global Rishta Portal, a platform designed to maintain contact and provide assistance. Additionally, they organize 'Welcome Ceremonies' to help students acclimate and offer briefings on safety and security in their host countries.

The government is also working to enhance travel convenience for Indian citizens by increasing visa-free entry and visa-on-arrival facilities. These measures are part of broader efforts to improve international mobility and support for Indian students studying overseas.
