A Noida-based private school has stirred controversy with a recent directive requesting parents to avoid sending non-vegetarian food in their children's lunchboxes.
The Delhi Public School (DPS) in Sector 132 issued the notice via WhatsApp on August 7, stating that it wasn’t a complete ban but a precautionary step due to concerns over food spoilage and potential health risks, as lunch is prepared in the morning.
The school's administration clarified that its primary focus is student health and creating an inclusive environment. The notice explained that by having a vegetarian-only lunch policy, the school aims to ensure that all students feel respected and comfortable, irrespective of their dietary choices.
The reaction to this policy has been polarized. Supporters argue that the measure promotes a healthier eating environment and addresses discomfort among students who may feel uneasy about non-vegetarian food. On the other hand, critics challenge the school's authority to dictate dietary preferences, asserting that such decisions should be left to parents.
Manoj Kataria, a Gautam Buddh Nagar Parents Welfare Association member, condemned the school’s approach. He emphasized that every child should be free to choose their food and pointed out that even vegetarian items can spoil if kept in tiffin boxes for extended periods.
