The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has officially registered a case in response to an urgent appeal by RTI activist Dr. Vivek Pandey, who demanded immediate action following the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. The incident, which occurred on August 10, has ignited widespread outrage and protests nationwide.
In his letter to the NHRC, dated August 15, Dr Pandey underscored the grave nature of the crime, describing it as a significant violation of fundamental human rights, including the right to life and dignity, especially for women in the medical profession. He emphasized the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. He called for several critical actions, including a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, holding public officials accountable, ensuring protection for whistleblowers, and conducting a nationwide review of safety measures in medical institutions.
The case, which is believed to involve gang rape, has drawn intense scrutiny and has been a flashpoint for public anger and demands for justice. Dr Pandey shared the update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), announcing that the NHRC has taken up the case based on his complaint. He hoped the commission would swiftly take cognizance of the issue and initiate necessary actions to address the serious concerns raised in his appeal.
