Dr Sandip Ghosh, former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, appeared for questioning at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office for the sixth consecutive day on August 21.
The Kolkata Police have also summoned him to disclose the identity of the deceased in the case involving the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at the college.
The scrutiny intensified during a Supreme Court hearing on August 20. Dr Ghosh faced criticism for allegedly attempting to pass off the crime as a suicide, a claim that Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, denied.
Chief Justice Chandrachud questioned why the FIR was delayed and why the crime scene was not properly secured, emphasizing the failure to protect the site from vandals. The Chief Justice also inquired about Dr Ghosh’s current status following his controversial reassignment to Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital despite resigning from RG Kar. This reassignment sparked strong student opposition, leading to protests and the Calcutta High Court's decision to place him on leave.
Additionally, media reports have suggested that Dr Ghosh may have been involved in "mafia-like operations" at RG Kar Medical College. As the investigation progresses, the CBI contemplates administering a polygraph test further to assess Dr Ghosh's involvement in the case. The ongoing scrutiny underscores the high-profile nature of the investigation and the serious allegations surrounding the former principal.
