CBI officials investigating the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata have made significant progress by uncovering crucial evidence linked to an attempted renovation near the crime scene.
The renovation was ordered on August 10, just a day after the victim's body was discovered in a room adjacent to the seminar hall.
This instruction reportedly came from a former senior doctor of the hospital, who was transferred following the incident and is known to be closely associated with the controversial former principal, Sandip Ghosh.
On the evening of August 13, hours after the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the investigation from Kolkata Police, state PWD staff attempted to begin the renovation. However, the work was abruptly halted due to student protests within the hospital premises. The CBI investigates whether the senior doctor independently made the renovation order or if others influenced it.
In addition, CBI officials are examining the reasons behind the hurried cremation of the victim's body, which occurred without preserving it in the hospital morgue. This decision prevented the possibility of a second post-mortem, which could have been crucial for the investigation. A team of CBI officers has questioned hospital staff about the instructions for the cremation, as well as Sandip Ghosh, who is being asked why he did not order the body’s preservation, especially if the victim’s family requested a second post-mortem.
