A third-year Computer Science student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead in his hostel room on September 9. The student, originally from Uttar Pradesh, was discovered in Brahmaputra Hostel.

The cause of death is currently under investigation, and the body has been sent for a postmortem examination, according to police officials.

This marks the fourth student death at IIT Guwahati this year. The previous incident occurred on August 9 when a female student was found hanging in her room. Following the latest death, students gathered in front of the administration building to protest, demanding justice for the deceased and enhanced mental health support from the institute. Protesters claimed that the student had been suffering from significant physical and mental health issues, which had reportedly been neglected despite submitted medical certificates.

In response to the protests, the Dean of Students' Welfare held discussions with the students, assuring them that the institute is committed to addressing student welfare and mental health concerns. The dean emphasized that the well-being of students is a top priority and that IIT Guwahati is dedicated to providing the necessary support and resources.

An institute spokesperson conveyed deep sorrow over the student's death, offering condolences to the family and friends. The spokesperson reaffirmed IIT Guwahati's commitment to improving student support systems to address the challenges its students face.
