To raise concerns over school safety, Goa police have arrested two teachers for allegedly assaulting students in separate incidents. The first incident took place at a school in Vasco, where a teacher reportedly beat a Class 8 student with a wooden ruler. In a separate case, a teacher from a Margao school was accused of slapping and kicking a Class 9 student.
Goa's Education Department has promptly reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corporal punishment. These arrests come on the heels of 15 reported cases of corporal punishment in Goa schools over the past year, which have led to disciplinary actions against 25 teachers. To tackle this ongoing issue, the Directorate of Education has issued a circular reminding all schools of the existing ban on corporal punishment. The circular also outlines several measures, including the immediate suspension of errant teachers, mandatory counselling, and enhanced teacher training on alternative disciplinary methods.
As per reports by Indian Express, the Goa Child Rights Commission will play a crucial role in monitoring schools for compliance with these regulations. The Commission is also set to conduct workshops focused on child rights and protection to educate teachers and school staff about appropriate discipline practices that do not involve physical punishment.
The recent arrests and subsequent policy measures aim to foster a safe and nurturing environment for students in Goa.
