India is making significant strides in space technology, positioning itself as a global leader through its homegrown satellite system, NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation).

Designed to reduce inefficiencies and double production efficiency across industries, NavIC is becoming a cornerstone of India’s ambitions to boost economic growth and self-reliance. The government’s recent policy mandating vehicle tracking devices powered by NavIC is expected to amplify these benefits without additional costs, enhancing efficiency in sectors like transportation and logistics.

Lt. Col. V S Velan, Founder and CTO of Elena Geo Systems, is a key figure behind NavIC’s expansion. Drawing from his military experience, particularly during Operation Vijay, he highlighted the importance of developing India’s independent satellite navigation system after witnessing the drawbacks of relying on foreign GPS during critical operations. “NavIC is not just a system for defense; it’s transforming industries and civilian applications, ensuring India’s technological independence,” Velan stated.

NavIC’s advanced capabilities, operating on superior frequencies like L5 and S, are cost-effective compared to older GPS technologies. This system is also being integrated across industries, from agriculture to disaster management, fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors. Emerging technologies like AI, 3D printing, and quantum computing are set to enhance satellite development further, optimizing real-time navigation and improving productivity.

Meanwhile, ISRO, in collaboration with IN-SPACe, is fostering innovation by partnering with startups and academia. Under the leadership of Dr. Pawan Goenka, IN-SPACe provides crucial support for space technology ventures, while sharing infrastructure with ISRO to accelerate development. However, more outreach and funding are necessary to help startups succeed in this competitive sector.

As India pushes toward its goal of becoming a multi-trillion-dollar economy, NavIC is proving to be a key player in driving growth, self-reliance, and technological advancement.
