Anju Sharma’s journey to becoming an IAS officer is a showcase to the fact that academic struggles do not define future success. Despite failing in Chemistry and Economics during her Class 10 and 12 exams, Anju cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) on her first attempt at the age of 22. Her story challenges the myth that only top students can crack one of India’s toughest exams.
In a candid interview, Anju shared how failing in key subjects during school became turning points in her life. Rather than succumbing to pressure, she decided to change her approach, focusing on early preparation instead of last-minute cramming. This strategy proved effective, enabling her to not only excel in her college exams but also earn a gold medal during her BSc and MBA studies in Rajasthan.
Anju credits her mother for the emotional support during her stressful school days, encouraging her to stay focused despite academic setbacks. Reflecting on her UPSC preparation, Anju revealed that last-minute studying often leads to panic and frustration, a mistake she avoided by preparing consistently well in advance.
Her hard work paid off when she successfully cleared the UPSC CSE on her first attempt and was listed among the toppers. In 1991, she began her career as a deputy collector in Rajkot. Over the past three decades, Anju has held a variety of key positions, including District Development Officer in Baroda, District Collector in Gandhinagar, and roles within the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the Department of Industries and Commerce.
Currently serving as the Principal Secretary of Higher and Technical Education in Gujarat, Anju Sharma’s journey is a powerful reminder that perseverance, determination, and the right strategy can overcome academic obstacles, paving the way for remarkable achievements.
