To promote sports culture and physical education among students, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has officially launched the Delhi State School Games. This ambitious initiative aims to provide students across the capital with a platform to showcase their athletic skills, encouraging physical fitness and nurturing young talent for future competitive sports.

According to The Economic Times, the games will see participation from over 60,000 students representing 6,500 schools from across Delhi. Students will compete in 14 diverse sports categories, including cricket, football, basketball, athletics, and more, giving young athletes from the Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19 age groups a chance to excel and gain exposure to high-level competition.

With events set to occur across 150+ venues—ranging from schools to well-equipped sports complexes—the initiative promises a comprehensive approach to school sports. The Delhi State School Games will also include cash awards and scholarships for top-performing students, providing incentives for talented young athletes. As part of the initiative, the government has committed to upgrading sports infrastructure in schools, ensuring that students have access to quality facilities and equipment to support their training. The initiative aligns with her administration’s vision of building a robust sports ecosystem in Delhi, where aspiring athletes can pursue their dreams without limitations.

The Delhi State School Games also strongly emphasise coaching and training. Expert coaches and trainers will work closely with students, helping them hone their skills and prepare for advanced levels of competition. The program hopes to identify promising talent who can represent Delhi at national and international sports events by investing in skill development and offering professional guidance.

The structure of the games is designed to facilitate inclusive participation. Initial competitions will occur at the district level, with winners advancing to the state-level finals. The best athletes will then have the chance to join the Delhi State School Games team, which could open doors to further opportunities in sports academies and professional training programs.

According to The Economic Times, this initiative, emphasising broad participation, professional training, and upgraded facilities, seeks to instil a lifelong appreciation for sports among students while identifying those who have the potential to excel at higher levels. The Delhi State School Games marks a significant step toward transforming the sports landscape in Delhi, creating a foundation for young athletes to thrive.
