The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced that the academic session for students up to the 9th standard will be shifted back to a November-December schedule, departing from the previously implemented March session.
The shift, confirmed by J&K Education Minister Sakina Itoo, aims to streamline the academic calendar and better align with seasonal patterns in the region.
Minister Itoo stated that for the 10th to 12th standards, the academic session change will be implemented next year, ensuring a gradual transition for higher classes. "For now, we will restore the academic session back to November-December up to 9th standard. For students of 10th to 12th, the academic session will be restored from next year," she said in a statement to news agency KNO.
This change marks a revision of the Uniform Academic Calendar that was initially introduced in 2022, which mandated a March-to-March schedule for all classes in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Uniform Academic Calendar was aimed at aligning the region’s academic cycle with other parts of the country. However, following feedback from educational stakeholders, the government has opted to revert to the traditional schedule partially.
The decision is expected to benefit younger students by aligning examination and holiday periods with local climatic and logistical factors, bringing a more practical approach to the region’s educational structure.
