Dr Aanchal Dhingra, a dentist from Rudrapur in Uttarakhand, is facing public backlash and legal consequences after a video of her firing gunshots into the air during Diwali celebrations went viral.

The incident occurred at her farmhouse in Gadarpur, where Dr Dhingra, who works at Guru Maa Advanced Dental Care, discharged five rounds from her licensed pistol. In the video, she can lean against a Mahindra Thar while celebrating a “pollution-free” Diwali by shooting into the sky.

The video sparked outrage across social media platforms, with many criticizing her actions as reckless and irresponsible. Under Indian law, discharging a firearm in public or for celebratory purposes is illegal. In response to public complaints, Rudrapur’s Station House Officer (SHO), Manoj Raturi, confirmed that Dr Dhingra’s behaviour violated legal protocols. A case has been filed against her under sections 27(1) and 30 of the Arms Act, which govern the unlawful use of firearms.

Authorities are also exploring revoking Dr. Dhingra’s firearms license as part of the legal proceedings. The incident has raised questions about the misuse of licensed firearms and sparked discussions on the responsible ownership and use of weapons. Dr Dhingra, married to businessman Abhimanyu Dhingra, has not addressed the controversy publicly.

Reactions on social media were divided. Many users expressed dismay at her actions, pointing out that her educational background did not excuse her lack of judgment. One user remarked, "Education and wisdom are often confused, but they are distinct. Her degree might have made her a doctor, but her actions could lead her to the police station." Others questioned whether the incident genuinely qualified as a crime, with a few suggesting that no harm was done.

As the investigation progresses, the incident continues to fuel debates on social media about the safety and ethical implications of celebratory gunfire.
