In a first-of-its-kind move for India, Kerala is equipping its secondary school teachers with the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Starting May 2nd, roughly 80,000 educators from grades 8 to 12 will undergo a three-month AI training program led by the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE).

This initiative aims to empower teachers with the skills to integrate AI into their classrooms by August 2024. The curriculum will cover a range of AI applications, from simplifying complex documents with AI-powered summaries to creating custom visuals using image generation techniques. Teachers will even learn how to turn these visuals into cartoons or paintings and combine them with text for a more engaging learning experience.

The program goes beyond just using AI tools. Teachers will delve into the world of "Prompt Engineering" and Machine Learning, gaining the ability to craft effective prompts and understand the programming that drives AI. Data visualization will also be covered, allowing educators to create dynamic presentations and animations tailored to their specific subjects.

AI for assessment is another key area of focus. Teachers will learn how to design diverse question formats, including unit tests, using AI tools. But it's not just about the tech. KITE emphasizes that the program will also equip teachers with the knowledge of potential AI risks and promote responsible use in the classroom.

Imagine a classroom where each teacher has access to a powerful AI assistant. This is the vision behind the program. Training will be conducted in batches of 25, with teachers using their own laptops and mobiles. KITE will even provide G-Suite accounts to ensure data privacy.

The ultimate goal? To personalize learning for every student. This includes creating inclusive classrooms that cater to the needs of students with disabilities.

Kerala is taking a big leap forward by being the first state in India to equip its teachers with AI skills. With a well-trained army of 180 Master Trainers ready to go, this program has the potential to revolutionize the way education is delivered in Kerala's secondary schools.
