Kerala schools are set to reopen on June 3rd, and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has prioritized student safety with a multi-pronged approach. The focus extends beyond infrastructure repairs and obtaining building clearances.

A high-level meeting led by Vijayan addressed the importance of creating a drug-free environment within educational institutions. Key directives included:

  • Enhancing School Security: Ensuring repairs are completed, obtaining fitness certificates for buildings, and removing potential hazards like trees or electrical lines posing a threat to students.
  • Combating Drug Use: Strict measures to prevent the use and sale of drugs within school premises. The Excise department will conduct regular inspections of shops near schools.
  • Promoting Anti-Drug Awareness: Regular public vigilance committee meetings at the district level, coupled with awareness campaigns and enforcement measures. This collaborative effort will involve children, parents, and teachers.

The plan also outlines specific activities throughout the year to reinforce the anti-drug message. These include:

  • A Children's Parliament on Anti-Narcotics Day (June 26th)
  • Delivery of the Chief Minister's anti-drug message to homes (November 1st)
  • Anti-drug seminars (December 10th)
  • Class council meetings (January 30th, 2025) to review progress

Furthermore, all government and related institutions have been directed to display anti-drug posters prominently.

This comprehensive approach by the Kerala government aims to create a safe and secure learning environment for students while actively combating the potential dangers of drug use.
