The Chhattisgarh government has extended the summer vacation for all schools in the state due to extreme heat, according to a PTI report. The school education department announced that schools will remain closed until June 25. This extension was decided late on Sunday evening, July 16.
Initially, the summer break for all schools in Chhattisgarh was scheduled from April 22 to June 15. However, due to the intense heatwave affecting the state, the government prioritized the health and safety of students by extending the vacation period. Schools are now set to reopen on June 26.
On Sunday, temperatures in the state capital, Raipur, and Rajnandgaon reached approximately 39 degrees Celsius, as reported by the weather department. The Meteorological (MeT) Centre in Raipur indicated that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are expected in isolated areas of the state over the next four days, starting June 16.
The MeT Centre also noted that conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into more parts of Chhattisgarh within four to five days. This development is expected to bring some relief from the scorching heat.
On Sunday, various locations in the state recorded high temperatures: Raipur (Lalpur station) at 39.3°C, Rajnandgaon at 39°C, Pendra at 40.2°C, Bilaspur at 30.8°C, Ambikapur at 32.6°C, and Jagdalpur at 35.2°C.
