IIIT-Lucknow Breaks New Ground With Kathak Classes For Stress Relief

The Indian Institute of Information and Technology, Lucknow (IIIT-L) is taking a unique approach to student well-being by introducing Kathak dance classes. This first-of-its-kind program aims to combat student stress through the traditional Indian dance form.

IIIT-L Director Arun Mohan Sherry emphasizes the importance of holistic student development. Citing research on the mental health benefits of music and dance, Sherry explains that Kathak, known for its meditative qualities, can promote relaxation and stress release.

To bridge the gap between engineering and classical dance, IIIT-L specifically recruited Anshima Chaudhari, a former BTech graduate with a background in Kathak and ongoing doctoral studies in the art form. Chaudhari's research focuses on the positive impact of Kathak on mental health, making her a perfect fit for the program.

The two-hour evening classes cater to students who have finished their regular coursework. While initial hesitation existed among some male students, Chaudhari reports a healthy mix of around 15 boys and 40 girls attending regularly.

Chaudhari highlights the holistic benefits of Kathak, explaining how rhythmic footwork, meaningful hand gestures, and expressive facial expressions create a mind-body connection. She emphasizes that the subtle movements help manage stress and improve focus, patience, and mental clarity.

This initiative complements existing mental wellness programs at top IITs across India. Workshops, sports activities, and unique stress-relief programs like IIT-Bombay's "Recharge Zone" showcase the growing focus on promoting mental health among engineering students. IIIT-L's Kathak classes offer a fresh perspective, integrating tradition and movement to address a critical student concern.
