Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy expressed strong reservations about the effectiveness of coaching classes, stating that they often fail to aid students genuinely.
During the launch of Paul Hewitt’s 13th edition of *Conceptual Physics* in Bengaluru on Monday, Murthy highlighted that many students who attend coaching centres tend to neglect their regular school teachers. He also noted that parents unable to provide academic support often turn to these centres as a remedy.
Murthy raised concerns about the rapid proliferation of coaching centres in India, suggesting it reveals underlying issues within the education system. He argued that this trend indicates a troubling emphasis on rote memorization rather than true understanding. He emphasized that the true goal of education should be to equip students with the skills to learn independently, including critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Reflecting on a recent interaction with a young student who sought advice on achieving similar success, Murthy conveyed that he did not wish the child to follow in his exact footsteps. Instead, he underscored the importance of developing one’s path through genuine learning and personal growth rather than merely emulating someone else’s success.
