On Saturday, September 21, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began questioning Dr. Birupaksha Biswas as part of their ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This inquiry comes on the heels of the arrest of former principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who has been implicated in the case.

Dr. Biswas, recently transferred by the West Bengal Health Department from Burdwan Medical College to a remote facility in Kakdwip, arrived at the CBI’s CGO Complex office in Salt Lake for questioning. According to CBI sources, Biswas was present at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, the same day the body of the victim was discovered. His presence, described as unauthorized, has raised suspicions, particularly given his alleged connections to a "North Bengal lobby" within state-run medical colleges, a group accused of intimidating students.

The CBI is probing Dr. Biswas about his activities at RG Kar Hospital on the day of the incident, emphasizing the importance of his testimony in understanding the broader context of the case. “He is being questioned about his presence at RG Kar Hospital on August 9 without any official duty, along with other inquiries,” a CBI official informed PTI.

In addition to the investigation, an FIR has been filed against Dr. Biswas and two other doctors—Avik De and Ranjit Saha—at Bowbazar police station. They are accused of threatening students at various medical colleges across West Bengal. The charges filed against them include Section 351 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to assault through gestures or preparations causing fear of criminal force.

The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting issues of safety and misconduct within medical institutions in West Bengal. As the investigation continues, the CBI is expected to delve deeper into the alleged North Bengal lobby and its impact on medical education in the region.
