Chamarajanagar district in Karnataka, identified as one of the most backward regions in the country, is grappling with a significant issue of school dropouts, reporting a total of 128 cases primarily among children from rural and interior villages across five taluks. Despite recent infrastructure improvements and the establishment of additional government schools in tribal and hilly areas, the dropout rate remains a pressing concern for local authorities.

The most affected area, Hanur taluk, has recorded the highest dropouts, totalling 48, followed by Chamarajanagar with 30, Kollegal with 25, Gundlupet with 19, and Yalandur with 10. Initially, officials noted that the dropout figure was as high as 247, but thanks to the concerted efforts of the education department, around 100 students have managed to return to school.

Counseling conducted by teachers and education department officials revealed that domestic issues and acute poverty are the primary drivers behind the high dropout rates. Many parents have been forced to withdraw approximately 30 students from school to have them contribute to family income through agricultural work. Additionally, absenteeism has risen among students living in hilly terrains like MM Hills, where children are often pressed into selling puja materials, such as flowers and incense, during local jathra festivals.

In response to this troubling trend, the education department is implementing measures to re-engage dropouts in the educational system. They are also monitoring families who have migrated to neighboring districts for employment opportunities, aiming to provide support and resources that could facilitate these children's return to school.

Local authorities remain committed to addressing the underlying causes of dropout rates, focusing on enhancing the overall educational environment and providing necessary support to families in need. The situation highlights the challenges faced in ensuring that every child receives an education, emphasizing the need for continued efforts and community involvement to improve the educational landscape in Chamarajanagar district.
