Akash Chaurasia, a 32-year-old farmer from Bundelkhand, Madhya Pradesh, has pioneered an innovative farming method called multi-layer farming, transforming the agricultural landscape. Inspired by multi-storey buildings, Akash's technique enables farmers to cultivate multiple crops in limited space, significantly reducing water consumption and boosting yields.
Akash began experimenting with this method in 2014 to address challenges like water scarcity and weed growth. His ingenious design constructs a 6.5-foot bamboo structure with a mesh top, allowing sunlight to reach plants while minimizing evaporation and saving up to 80% of water compared to traditional farming. The multi-layer system incorporates various crops like spinach, coriander, and papaya, planted at different heights, combating weeds and maximizing land use.
With over 20 national awards, Akash has trained 80,000 farmers and educated millions more through his YouTube channel. His success has earned him an annual income of approximately ₹30 lakh, demonstrating the potential of innovative techniques in addressing India's agricultural challenges.
