In an inspiring journey, a young woman from a traditional Marwari family in Jaipur, India, defied cultural norms to pursue her dream of studying abroad.
After completing high school at Jayshree Periwal International School, an International Baccalaureate institution, she set her sights on the University of Chicago, where she hoped to explore her passion for Alzheimer's research.
Despite her family’s reservations about sending her so far from home, she convinced them with a promise: invest in her high school years, and she would ensure they wouldn’t have to pay for her college education. Now, with a 100% scholarship at the prestigious university, she has made that promise a reality.
The path wasn’t easy. As a first-generation international student, she faced challenges, from a 22-hour solo journey across the globe to a broken Forex card upon arrival. However, fate intervened when she met two Indian master’s students who helped her navigate her first week in the U.S., turning strangers into lifelong friends.
At the University of Chicago, she begins her journey in Alzheimer’s research, shadowing professionals and planning to get hands-on experience in neurobiology and therapy development. The university’s open, diverse environment has been crucial to her growth, allowing her to redefine her career path while immersing herself in global perspectives.
Her experience has expanded her worldview and made her a more profound thinker and listener. Embracing new cultures and perspectives has enriched her life, allowing her to grow beyond the bubble she once knew. As she continues her studies, she hopes to return to India with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the pharmaceutical sector or research labs, bringing global expertise to address local challenges in Alzheimer’s research.
