The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released new instructions requiring school heads and teachers from all the affiliated schools to undergo professional development. In two April 1, 2025, official notifications, the Board described a well-defined training scheme in conformity with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST).
As per the rules, every educator has to undergo a minimum of 50 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) annually-half through CBSE or government training institutes and the remaining half through in-house or local collaborative programmes. The training will focus on three core areas: Core Values and Ethics (12 hours), Knowledge and Practice (24 hours), and Professional Growth and Development (14 hours).
The Board has also identified a broad variety of academic and assessment tasks-such as board exam responsibilities, research activity, CBSE conference attendance, and online content development-as CPD hours.
For 2025, CBSE has declared STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) as its theme for annual training. Schools have been urged to organize District Level Deliberations (DLDs) to facilitate discussion and innovation in STEM education, focusing on inquiry-based and interdisciplinary teaching.
All the schools that are affiliated have to adhere to these revised norms. CBSE encouraged Heads of Institutions to drive the change by promoting a culture of continuous learning and professional excellence.
