The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Canada, Marc Miller, has announced a reduction in the number of hours they can work off campus.

Effective immediately, international students will only be allowed to work a maximum of 24 hours per week, down from the previous allowance of more than 20 hours.

Miller justified the decision by pointing to recent studies conducted in both the US and Canada, which revealed a concerning decline in academic performance among students who worked more than 28 hours per week.

According to these studies, exceeding 24 hours of weekly employment increased the likelihood of students dropping out of their programs.

The minister emphasized that the primary goal is to prioritize students' academic pursuits while still allowing them the opportunity to work part-time. He also stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between academic engagement and employment opportunities.

Despite the stricter work limits, students with scheduled academic breaks will still have the flexibility to work unlimited hours during those periods. This adjustment, Miller believes, will help international students concentrate on their studies and reduce the risk of academic setbacks.
