The Indian Embassy in Beijing is taking steps to support Indian students who faced extended academic journeys due to China's visa bans during the COVID-19 pandemic.
An estimated 80 students, both new and continuing, from over 13 Chinese universities participated in a recent "welcome and interaction ceremony" at the Embassy. This event marked the first of its kind, aimed at addressing student concerns and grievances.
Ambassador Pradeep Kumar Rawat and Counsellor Nitinjeet Singh met with the students on May 5th. The session included a presentation by the Embassy's Second Secretary (Education), Amit Sharma, detailing available student services, essential guidelines, and social media updates.
The Toll of Visa Restrictions
Prior to the pandemic, China boasted over 23,000 Indian students, primarily enrolled in medical programs. This figure reportedly dipped to around 10,000 due in part to visa restrictions. The allure of Chinese medical universities stemmed from high costs associated with private medical colleges in India and intense competition for government institutions. However, these students must still qualify for practice in India by passing the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE).
The pandemic forced many Indian students to return home during lockdowns. China's subsequent visa bans and restrictions prevented their return until early 2023. This delay significantly impacted academic progress, especially for students in the later stages of their programs.
A Step Towards Support
Students expressed frustration with China's visa policies, highlighting the financial strain and disruption caused to their studies. Many come from middle-class backgrounds and faced significant challenges managing their budgets during the extended absence.
The Embassy's outreach program acknowledges the difficulties faced by these students. During the height of the visa restrictions, the Embassy actively lobbied for their return, recognizing the detrimental effects on academic careers.
The session also emphasized the importance of student safety and adherence to local laws. Recent reports indicate three Indian students are currently under detention in China for alleged criminal offenses.
This initiative by the Indian Embassy demonstrates a commitment to supporting its student community in China and navigating the complexities that arose during the pandemic.
