At Sri Subbaraya and Narayana College in Narasaraopet, Andhra Pradesh, a disturbing incident of ragging at the boys' hostel came to light after a video went viral on social media.
The footage, which shows senior students physically assaulting second-year students, has drawn widespread outrage. In the video, the juniors are seen being called into a room where they are mercilessly beaten by the seniors, who can be heard laughing and encouraging each other during the assault, as mentioned in a report by Edex Live.
The incident, which took place in February, involved six identified students. The juniors had not reported the ragging to the college management at the time, but the situation came to the attention of the police after a complaint was lodged recently. The Narasaraopet I Town Circle Inspector, Krishna Reddy, confirmed that the seniors involved have since graduated. The police have filed cases under various sections of the Prohibition of Ragging Act 2011.
One of the accused students has been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway. Inspector Reddy emphasized the seriousness of ragging as a punishable offence and urged students to promptly report such incidents to the college management and the authorities to ensure timely action. The college and the broader community are now grappling with the aftermath of this severe breach of student safety and discipline.
