Gujarat is grappling with intense rainfall, leading to widespread waterlogging and triggering the closure of all primary schools across the state. The state government has taken this precaution in response to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) red alert, which forecasts heavy to hefty rainfall over the next few days.
The IMD has warned of severe weather conditions that could lead to significant disruption, particularly in low-lying areas. With various districts already experiencing substantial waterlogging, the state has mobilised emergency response teams to manage the situation. Thirteen National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and twenty-two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed across the most affected districts to assist with relief and rescue operations.
According to News Jagran reports, State Education Minister Praful Pansheriya announced the closure of schools, emphasising that the safety of students is the government's top priority. "In light of the severe weather conditions and the potential risks posed by flooding and waterlogging, it is imperative that we take every precaution to protect our students," Pansheriya stated.
The heavy rains have already forced the evacuation of approximately 280 residents from low-lying areas in Bharuch city, where water levels have risen to dangerous levels. These individuals have been relocated to safer locations, with local authorities closely monitoring the situation.
School closures are expected to impact thousands of students and their families. However, with the possibility of worsening conditions, the state government has decided that the risk of keeping schools open outweighs the inconvenience caused by their temporary closure.
As the situation unfolds, authorities urge residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel. The IMD has also advised the public to remain vigilant and prepared for further disruptions, including power outages and traffic delays, as the rains continue.
The state government is working in close coordination with disaster management agencies to ensure a swift response to any emergencies that may arise. Relief camps have been set up in several districts, and essential supplies, including food and medical aid, are distributed to those affected by the floods.
