North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri is facing severe allegations as students, interns, and doctors gheraoed the principal, accusing the institution of mark sheet tampering and fostering a culture of threats.
The protest, captured in a video shared by ANI on September 4, reflects growing concerns over the influence of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) within the college.
Ajmad Atiq, a second-year student, claimed that students connected to the TMC receive preferential treatment, including manipulated exam scores. He alleged that one student’s marks were increased from 37 to 93, highlighting the extent of the favouritism. According to Atiq, those not affiliated with the ruling party are often threatened, creating a toxic environment at the institution.
The protesters have put forward two main demands: the dissolution of the TMC unit within the college and the resignation of the dean and assistant dean. These demands underscore the deep frustration among students and staff over what they see as rampant corruption and political interference in the academic process.
As the situation escalates, the college administration is pressured to address these allegations and restore trust within the institution.
