At the 15th convocation ceremony of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), esteemed scientist and former ISRO chairman K. Kasturirangan delivered a compelling address on the urgent need for an interdisciplinary approach to education. His remarks came as a clarion call for educational institutions to foster synergy among various fields of study to tackle the complex challenges facing society today effectively.

Kasturirangan emphasized that integrating the arts, humanities, social sciences, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is crucial for nurturing students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. He articulated that contemporary education must evolve to encourage collaboration across disciplines, enabling learners to draw insights from multiple fields. This holistic approach enhances academic rigour and prepares students to address pressing global issues such as climate change, sustainable development, healthcare, and economic growth.

The scientist further stressed the importance of embedding Indian values and cultural heritage within the educational framework. He asserted that understanding one’s cultural context is vital for personal and professional growth, allowing students to approach problems with a nuanced perspective that respects tradition while embracing innovation.

Vocational training and skill development were also central themes in Kasturirangan's address. He highlighted the necessity of enhancing teacher capacity and creating an environment conducive to lifelong learning. By investing in the professional development of educators, institutions can better equip them to impart practical skills and knowledge that align with industry demands.

Kasturirangan’s insights resonate strongly with the current trajectory of India’s education sector, which is increasingly shifting toward a model that values holistic learning and interdisciplinary engagement. The MAHE convocation ceremony was a testament to this vision, with over 4,000 students receiving their degrees, marking a significant milestone in their academic journeys.

As India strives for innovation and progress in a rapidly changing global landscape, K. Kasturirangan's advocacy for interdisciplinary synergy in education is a guiding principle for developing a skilled and adaptable workforce. His vision aligns with the nation’s aspirations to cultivate well-rounded individuals capable of contributing effectively to society and driving sustainable development.
