Tensions escalated at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of October 3, as students protested the arrest of Ashish Pandey by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In a display of discontent, students burned an effigy of Pandey, a close associate of former Principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who is also facing corruption charges.
Pandey’s arrest comes as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of financial misconduct linked to Dr Ghosh, who was detained on September 2. The CBI's inquiry into these corruption charges intensified after the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9, which highlighted the urgent need for improved safety and security measures for healthcare professionals.
Eyewitness accounts reported that the protests were fueled by frustration over systemic issues within the institution, particularly concerning allegations that Pandey had manipulated tenders for medical equipment and infrastructure projects to favour particular vendors chosen by Dr Ghosh. This has raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability in managing hospital resources.
Dr Abhinaba Pal, a prominent voice on social media, commented on the situation, stating, “Master and Apprentice will now face the CBI investigation together.” His tweet included a protest video, underscoring the students' demand for justice and accountability.
As the situation unfolds, Pandey is set to be presented before a special court on October 4. The protests reflect a growing discontent among medical students and staff at RG Kar, who call for reforms to ensure their safety and integrity in the workplace amidst this troubling backdrop of alleged corruption.
