The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, has once again solidified its position as the premier institution in India, ranking in the 251-300 band globally in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025. This achievement highlights IISc's growing influence on the international academic stage, as the institution continues to excel in research, innovation, and teaching.
Anna University secured the second spot among Indian universities, while Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, took third place. These institutions' rankings reflect India's growing presence in the global academic community. The 2025 THE rankings included 2,092 universities, with 185 new entries compared to the previous year, signaling increased competition and academic excellence worldwide.
The University of Oxford retained its top position for the ninth consecutive year, reinforcing its global reputation. According to the official THE Rankings 2025 report, Oxford's strong performance was driven by significant improvements in its industry income, patent citations, and teaching scores. Following closely, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked second, while Harvard University took the third spot.
Indian universities made impressive strides in the rankings this year. The top 10 Indian institutions include Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in Chennai, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences in Bajhol, and Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. Other notable universities include Amity University in Noida, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) in Pilani, and VIT University in Vellore.
The results of the 2025 rankings highlight the continued improvement in India's higher education sector, driven by research output, collaboration, and innovation, contributing to the nation's growing academic prowess on the world stage.
