The Gujarat government has declared a one-day state mourning on Thursday to honour the passing of veteran industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, who passed away on Wednesday evening. The visionary leader, known for his unparalleled contributions to India’s industry and social welfare, was mourned nationwide, prompting an outpouring of grief.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel travelled to Mumbai on Thursday to pay his final respects to Tata, whose mortal remains were placed at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Nariman Point. After offering his tribute, Patel is scheduled to return to Gandhinagar later.
Establishing the Tata Nano plant in Sanand in 2008 exemplifies Ratan Tata’s deep connection with Gujarat. After facing protests in Singur, West Bengal, Tata decided to relocate the project, and Gujarat, under the leadership of then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, extended an invitation with solid support. This led to the creating of a manufacturing hub in Sanand, producing the world’s most affordable car, the Tata Nano. The move not only positioned Gujarat as a key player in India’s automotive industry but also created thousands of jobs and spurred regional development.
Beyond the automotive sector, Tata Group’s presence in Gujarat spans multiple industries. Tata Chemicals operates a significant plant in Mithapur, while Tata Power has invested in clean energy projects like wind and solar power. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has also boosted Gujarat’s growing IT sector.
